Difference between a private server and a virtual private server

Hello,

To understand the difference between the dedicated servers and the virtual private servers here is a simpleĀ  example. If you live and own a mansion, you can use all the resources like electricity, water supply etc in the mansion according to your needs and requirements and you can even share it with someone if you want to.Whereas,if you live in an apartment, you are only given a limited area where you can use the resources and that to in a certain limit as other people also share the apartment with you and they also need the resources. So the main difference between the dedicated server and the virtual private server is also the same.A private server which is also known as a Dedicated server is a server on which there is only one account holder and the account holder is the person to whom the entire server belongs or in other words a dedicated server is the server which completely belongs to the client (customer). As there is no other account holder on the server the client is able to modify or say customize the server according to the needs and the requirements of the client. For example the client can choose the disk space, cpu and ram according to the requirements. As,the word virtual (which means not true) it self suggests that a virtual server or a virtual private server or a virtual private server does not completely belong to one single client. So as it does not belong to one single client it is but obvious that the client has only given a part of the server.Due to this reason the customer is not able to disk space, cpu and ram.

In a virtual private server the client can only choose a suitable package according to the needs as it is not possible to customize the server according to the needs. The only option is to look for a better package from the different packages offered by the hosting company. If the clients needs and requirements are more than what is offered in the packages that the only option is to go for a dedicated server. This is due to the fact that the dedicated server provides more resources than the virtual private.Due to this reason the virtual private server is said to be a perfect fill in between the shared server and a dedicated server. But before choosing the virtual private server the client has to note an important point that the performance of the virtual private server also depends on the other users having an account on the server as they are also using the resources of the server.Another point to think about is,features of the dedicated server and the virtual private server are more or less the same whereas the resources are different.

The virtual private server is a kind of a shared server as the client having an account on the virtual private server is sharing the server with the other clients having an account on the same server. This for some is a negative point but for some is a positive point. As there are a number of account holders on the virtual private server the cost and the maintainance of the server is distributed among all the account holders on the server. But as the dedicated server has only one account holder the cost and the maintainance of the server is to be paid by the account holder.Due to this reason dedicated servers are not considered to be affordable ones but as mentioned in the above example the client can share the dedicated server with someone of the client wants. So it is necessary that the client selects the dedicated server only if the clients needs and requirements are not fulfilled by the virtual private server. If the dedicated server is affordable for the client than it is very good for the client as all the resources can be utilised by the client and the client does not have to worry about the other account holders. So all these points should be considered while choosing from a dedicated server and a virtual private server.
