The World Wide Web has been growing day by day.There are many factors due to which the World Wide Web has been growing from a long time.One of the reason for the growth of the World Wide Web is the Apache web server.Apache web server which is the Apache HTTP server and it is commonly referred to Apache has played a very important role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web.Netscape Communications corporation web server which is now known as Sun Java System Web Server did not have any other alternative before the Apache web server was introduced.After the launch of the Apache web server ,Apache web server became the alternative not only to the Netscape Communications corporation web server but also became a big rival to the other Unix-based Dedicated servers as it is very good in terms of performance and functionality.There are two reasons why the name of the project was chosen as Apache.One of them was to respect the native American Indian tribe as they were well known for their endurance and their warfare skills and the other reason was that the project’s roots were the set of patches to the codebase of NCSA HTTPd 1.3 – making it a “patchy” server although the latter theory is a lucky coincidence.The Apache Software Foundation has an open community under it’s auspices which has developed and maintained the Apache.Apache is characterized as free software and open source software and it is released under the Apache License.Apache is available for a wide variety of operating systems including Solaris ,Free BSD ,Mac OS X ,Linux ,TPF ,Microsoft Windows ,OS/2 ,Unix ,eComStation.Apache has been the most popular HTTP server on the World Wide Web since April 1996.Of all websites Apache served 49.12% in June 2008.
mod perl ,mod python ,TCL and PHP are supported by some common language interfaces.By using free scripts such as AWstats/W3Perl or Visitors.configurable error messages,DBMS-based authentication databases, and content negotiation are also featured by Apache.Apache is also supported by several graphical users interfaces (GUIs) which allow easier, more intuitive configuration of the server.Apache Dedicated servers the static content and even the dynamic web pages on the world wide web.Many web aplications are designed as per the expectation of the environment provided by Apache.Apache is the web server component of the popular LAMP web server application stack, alongside MySQL, and the PHP/Perl/Python programming languages.Apache is used to run some of the biggest websites in the world.A modified version of Apache is used to run Google’s search engine front end ,named Google web server (GWS).Wikimedia projects and wilipedia are also run on Apache Dedicated servers. These are the one of the most famous websites on the internet.The main competitor to Apache is none other than Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).Internet Information Services is trailed by Sun Microsystems’Sun Java System Web Server and a host of other applications such as Zeus Web Server.Apache 2.2.9 ,Apache 2.0.63 and Apache 1.3.41 versions.Apache 2.2.9
